October 20, 2017 — Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is replacing the smallest generator at its Ranney Falls Generating Station with a 10-MW unit, which the company says will more than double the station’s capacity.

Replacing the smallest generator — which is a century-old unit — is a “cost effective way of adding clean renewable generation to Ontario’s electricity mix,” says OPG.

About 70 skilled trade workers are currently working on the project. The new generating unit is expected to be operational in 2020 and will produce enough energy each year to power about 10,000 homes, the company says.

A new water spillway will also be installed, which OPG says will improve public safety.

“Ranney Falls is the next in a long line of OPG hydroelectric stations to be refurbished and upgraded,” said Mike Martelli, OPG’s president of renewable generation and power marketing. “Electricity customers will benefit from this investment for generations.”

OPG’s predecessor, The Hydroelectric Power Commission of Ontario, built the Ranney Falls Generating Station in 1922.
